Coconut Oil for Weight Loss? There Seems to Be Something to it…

admin 05 Aug 2010 | : Diet Tips, Weight Loss

In this post I’m going to explore the benefits of coconut oil for weight loss…

Coconuts have long since surpassed their original role of providing sustenance for Robinson Crusoe and other shipwreck survivors left to fend for themselves on some remote island.

Their oil, in particular, has proven a boon for anyone desiring softer skin, healthier hair, and a decrease in sugar and carb cravings (which may aid in weight loss).

And just what places coconut oil in such a league of its own when it comes to losing weight?

Well, while all oils have chains of fatty acids, most have what are called LCTs, or long-chained triglycerides, that are not easily digested, and instead are stored in the cells as fat.  Coconut oil contains MCTs, or medium-chained triglycerides, which are digested before they go deep within the digestive tract.  Because they burn up fast, they cannot be stored as fat.

So, even though coconut oil has a high caloric content, they are calories that are used quickly as energy and not stored.  Hence, eating two to three tablespoons of coconut oil throughout the day, results in a feeling of fullness, major advantage to anyone trying to lose or control weight.

According to naturopathic doctor, Bruce File, author of “The Coconut Miracle” (2004), coconut oil has also been shown in studies to raise thermo genesis of the body, which increases the body’s metabolic rate, burning even more calories.

As if weight control and increased energy are not enough to convince you to begin a coconut oil regimen, there are even more benefits reported from ingesting it.  Skin issues, such as rashes, scrapes and burns ~ that have not responded to other forms of treatments ~ miraculously heal and fade with repeated intake of coconut oil.  Its antiviral and antibacterial properties are largely attributable to the fact that the primary MCT in coconut oil is lauric acid, also found in mother’s milk (coconut oil is the one natural substance that contains the highest amount of lauric acid, next to mother’s milk).

Finally, its resistance to heat makes it the healthiest oil available for cooking.  But always be sure to opt for the virgin variety. Since it has not been processed, it retains its nutritional benefits.   Best of all, coconut oil is readily available at your local health food store, so no tree climbing is required to acquire it!
